At least 51 people — including seven children at an elementary school — were killed when a massive tornado that struck just outside Monday.
According to CNN, Seven children were killed at Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, Oklahoma. Emergency rescue teams were seen scouring the rubble Monday evening.
The tornado was estimated to be at least 2 miles wide at one point as it moved through the southern part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, KFOR reported. Video from CNN affiliates showed a huge funnel cloud stretching from the sky to the ground.
People are trapped. You are going to see the devastation for days to come,” Betsy Randolph, spokeswoman for Oklahoma Highway Patrol, told CNN late Monday afternoon. She did not say how many people were trapped. “Send your prayers heavenward because there are people fighting for their lives.”
Amy Elliott, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office, said the death toll is expected to rise.
