Scripture Proclaims the Benefits of Singing, Part II

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Psalm 96:1

We’ve all heard the saying, “You are what you eat”: but scripture also tells us that we are what we sing.  To sing is to create vibration: in our bodies and in the atmosphere.  Studies have found that singing has many health benefits for young and old[1], including:

  • Improved respiratory health
  • Reduced stress
  • Stronger immune system
  • Increased cognitive function

When you combine this wisdom with the singing of God’s word and His promises, it’s no wonder that singing is mentioned in the Bible almost 200 times! Even just listening to gospel music has been proven to improve mental health and psychological well-being[2].

When we sing the words of God, we can literally change ourselves for the better: and change the world too.

Here are more scriptures which proclaim the many benefits of singing to the Lord:

FOR PEACE

Isaiah 26:1  – [ A Song of Salvation ] In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: “We have a strong city; God will appoint salvation for walls and bulwarks.

Isaiah 54:1 – [ A Perpetual Covenant of Peace ] “Sing, O barren, You who have not borne! Break forth into singing, and cry aloud, You who have not labored with child! For more are the children of the desolate Than the children of the married woman,” says the Lord.

Zephaniah 3:17 – The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

FOR THE GLORY OF NATURE

1 Chronicles 16:23 – Sing to the Lord, all the earth; Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.

Isaiah 55:12 – “For you shall go out with joy, And be led out with peace; The mountains and the hills Shall break forth into singing before you, And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Psalm 65:13 – The pastures are clothed with flocks; The valleys also are covered with grain; They shout for joy, they also sing.

Psalm 104:12 – By them the birds of the heavens have their home; They sing among the branches.

Song of Solomon 2:12 – The flowers appear on the earth; The time of singing has come, And the voice of the turtledove Is heard in our land.

TO COMMAND THE PRESENCE OF GOD

Zechariah 2:10 – Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,” says the Lord.

Revelation 5:9-10 – And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll,

And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,

10 And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.”

Revelation 14:3-4 – 3 And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4 These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as firstfruits to God and the Lamb.

FOR GOD’S WISDOM

1 Chronicles 16:9 – Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works!

1 Corinthians 14:15 – What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

Colossians 3:16 – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
