West Angeles Church of God In Christ, First Lady Mae L. Blake, and the Women’s Affairs Organization celebrated a glorious Women’s Day on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8, 2016. The color for the day was blue, and the women of West Angeles were resplendent in shades which ranged from pale blue to rich navy.

Supervisor Francis Elizabeth Harris, in a beautiful pale blue robe made especially for the day, thanked Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr. and First Lady Mae L. Blake for the opportunity to deliver the Word for the 8 a.m. service, expressing her humility for the honor of being asked to do so.

“Paul said, ‘It’s an effectual door,'” Supervisor Harris began. “In other words, it’s a door that doesn’t open every day.”

Before her sermon titled, The Expectation of Excellence, “Mother Harris,” as she is affectionately known, recalled a miracle of answered prayer during a time of personal sorrow many years ago.

“In 1975, my mother passed away from breast cancer. For a few years I sat at a desk at my local church, tears running under my chin. I said, ‘Lord, all these folks that say they hear from You, and they have divine revelation… why doesn’t somebody see my hurt? Why can’t somebody care?’”

And at that moment, Lady Mae called her, extending her compassion and love on Mother’s Day.

On the program for the morning services were dynamic performances by the Chosen Vessels Dance Ministry, a vocal duet by husband and wife Franklin and Nyjah Westbrooks, a classical piano solo by 19-year-old Justin Syas, who will study in England at Cambridge this summer, and the fabulous Women’s Day Choir, led by anointed Music Director Trenora Parker.

“What a great, anointed ministry that God has given us…Lady Mae, we salute you today. You’re a woman of excellence.”

DVDs of all services of the 2016 Women’s Day Celebration are available HERE, at West Angeles Gospel on Demand.  Highlights from the day follow:

“Pursuing excellence does not mean that you are superhuman…Excellence is best described in Colossians 3:23 – And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord.” – Supervisor Francis Elizabeth Harris

“A word to the mothers: this is Mother’s Day…and even when our children don’t see their way, we ought to be their way. Help your children to see what they don’t see.”

“There’s just a little something that kept coming to me, and we all need to say it as women of the Lord: ‘My tree must blossom.’”

“There’s nothing more beautiful than a beautiful tree bearing fruit in season.”

“All the hard work has been done. You labored, you toiled; now the work is over. You’re entitled to the fruit…You have the right to expect the reward of your labor.”

“God has looked upon us today with favor, and has placed us in a favorable circumstance for bringing forth fruit.”

“Bishop and Lady Mae; they preach, they teach, and they live the example of holiness. And because he preaches truth, it affords us the opportunity to recognize many ills that plague many people’s lives today.”

“Because we are forewarned through the Word, we who receive and apply the Word of God in our daily lives are able to escape and even avoid many sinful and harsh environments that others face day to day.”

“Sometimes we take what God has given us for granted, and don’t take note of what has been given to us freely.”

“God has given us great culture and care. Can somebody say, ‘Ministries’?”

“A word to the mothers: “This is Mother’s Day…and even when our children don’t see their way, we ought to be their way. Help your children to see what they don’t see.” – Supervisor Francis Elizabeth Harris

“I don’t care how hard you did what you did, or what you thought, you still don’t deserve it.”

“You know we’ve got a better way. We’ve got more than we’ve ever had in our lives.”

“Sometimes we have to figure out what to wear. Sometimes we have more than one color to go with one outfit…but God has given us choice. Somebody shout out, ‘Better way!’”

“On top all God’s goodness, he has also given us and blessed us with the gift of the Holy Ghost…all you have to do is ask for it.”

“Get happy about being saved. Get happy for giving up your sins, and tell God, ‘Thank you!’”

“The Holy Ghost is a gift!”

“God has a reason to expect exceptional fruit from a tree on which He has bestowed such exceptional advantages.”

“If truth be told, our lives should be better. We should be more dedicated. We should be more committed. We should be able to give freely, and glorify God. He told us to set our affections on things above and let God do the work.”

“Righteousness, meekness, and moral excellence spring forth from our day in Christ and our devotion to God.”

“We’re not our own and we’ve been bought with a price.”

“Righteousness, meekness, and moral excellence spring forth from our devotion to God.” – Supervisor Francis Elizabeth Harris

“It does not matter how good you are at doing what you’ve prepared yourself for in life, you can always improve and stay up to date in a changing world. That’s what God is expecting us to do.”

“God expected fruit when He came to the tree, but because there was none, He was disappointed. We don’t want to disappoint God with our daily lives. We want to live a life that is pleasing in His sight.”

“My Mamma used to tell me all the time, ‘If you want to be a good wife, you’ve got to stay in your house…Don’t be busy in other women’s houses.’”

“Identify your weaknesses.”

“Donny McClurkin says, ‘We fall down, but we get up.’ But you’ll know what tripped you!”

“Remedy your flaws, because we want to be the best we can be.”

“Take responsibility at the earliest opportunity. Say, ‘Yeah, that was me.’”

“You can act a lie as well as tell a lie. You can be a lie by being quiet and not stepping up to the plate.”

“Never be afraid to learn, and use the lessons of your failure.”

“Even when you miss an opportunity, don’t waste time on regrets. Examine what it was that caused you to ignore the opportunity.”

“Pursuing excellence does not mean that you are superhuman. It does not hold you in unrealistic values. Excellence is best described in Colossians 3:23-24: And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”

“Bishop and Lady Mae; they preach, they teach, and they live the example of holiness.” – Supervisor Francis Elizabeth Harris

“It’s only what you do for Christ that will last.”

“When these values become a part of your everyday being, they will guide your actions, your attitude, and even your words.”

“Use what God has given you freely. The gift of the Holy Ghost is given freely. It will take you to the right person at the right time, in the right place. It will open doors where man would say, ‘No’…but that same man will turn around, change his mind – and don’t even know why he changed his mind – and tell you ‘Yes.’”

“Knowing that God is with you is key today. You must know that God is on your side.”

“Woman is made for a man, and the only way you’re going to produce? You’ve got to have a male and a female. You can’t even get electricity with two sockets!”

“Faith works – if you’re doing the will of God.”

“We’re the Lord’s vineyard.”

“I thank God for Jesus!”

“If you live right, heaven belongs to you…Be the woman that God has called you to be.”

Bishop Blake: In Praise of Wives and Mothers

During the month of May and in celebration of Mother’s Day, West Angeles honors wives and mothers everywhere with a compilation of quotes by Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr. who would like to thank “mothers and wives everywhere for their strength, courage, and resilience, and for their ability to do the extraordinary!”

“Brethren, I am prone to say that one of the greatest things that God ever did was to create women.”

“The word of God tells us that the last item on God’s agenda of creation was woman. God looked at Adam and then found that none of the things that already existed could provide Adam with the…added aspects of existence that he needed.”

“Nothing in creation was sufficient for Adam except Eve.”

“Woman was made out of man, so that man would esteem her and seek her welfare as he esteemed himself.”

“If he abased her and disrespected her, then he abased and disrespected himself. If he abused her, then he abused himself.”

“In taking woman out of man, God implied that woman was a part of man.”

“They are placed on earth as helpers, not as inferior beings…not as mere tools or instruments, but as partners in the matter of life.”

“Men have understanding of the head. Women have understanding of the heart.”

“Within her being is that which correlates itself of the being of God and that which responds to a presence of God and that which cries out for communion with Almighty God.”

“Within her being is that which shall never die, that which is of inestimable value, that for which Jesus Christ died.”

“A mother’s love is unconditional.  God’s love is unconditional” – Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr.

“A man who does not understand and appreciate women cannot understand and appreciate a wife.”

“I don’t care what men say, I don’t care how foolish and old-fashioned the moral codes may seem to be…God’s plan is still the only right plan for regulating the relationships between men and women.”

“The Bible says, ‘Let every man have his own wife – not somebody else’s wife – and let every woman have her own husband.’”

“Along the road of life, there is no greater privilege that one can find than having a wife.”

“(Jules) Michelet says, ‘To be a man in the true sense is, in the first place, and above all things is to have a wife.'” 1

“The man who has the greatest vision and fulfills the greatest dream, is the man whose wife has and sees his vision and dreams his dream with him.”

“If we’re to overcome evil, it’s because mothers unanimously stand to oppose the tide of evil that’s sweeping across our world.” – Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr.

“The man who enjoys life most is the man who shares it with a lifetime partner.”

“L.M. Stretch said, ‘A good wife makes the cares of the world sit easy, and adds sweetness to its pleasure. She’s a man’s best companion in prosperity, and his best, if not his only friend in adversity. The most careful preserver of his health, and the kindest attendant on his sickness; a faithful advisor in distress, a comforter in affliction. How many of you know that a wife is all those things and more?”2

“A wife is the only one who sees you at your worst, and loves you for the best that is within you.”

“Fella, if you’re one of those guys who said, ‘I’m never going to get married. I’m going to stay single all my life,’ I feel sorry for you! You don’t know what you are missing! Somebody ought to say ‘AMEN!’”

“A woman reaches the highest level of excellence when she becomes a mother.”

“God could have created man by some other means. He could have had us hatch out of flowers or come up out of the water…but instead, God chose the means of a mother to bring us to the earth.”

“It’s on mother’s knee that he learns how to pray, learn how to conceive of almighty God”.

“If [the mother is] nervous and insecure, then to an extent, the child will be nervous and insecure…If the mother is peaceful and serene then the child will gain that same kind of confidence in life.”

“Napoleon said that the future destiny of children is always in the hands of the mothers. Someone else said that the future of society is in the hands of mothers.” 3

“It’s a good day to thank God that He gave you a treasure that cannot be evaluated or assessed…That is the treasure of a precious Mother” -– Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr.

“If we’re to overcome evil, it’s because mothers unanimously stand to oppose the tide of evil that’s sweeping across our world.”

“Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. What a miserable place the world would be if it were not for mothers who love Almighty God.”

“When you think about a mother’s love, you have to think about the love of Almighty God.”

“A mother’s love is unconditional…God’s love is unconditional.”

“A father will get stern on you. A father will get quiet on you…but mother would say, ‘Come on in here for a minute.”

“It’s a good day to thank God that He gave you a treasure that cannot be evaluated or assessed…That is the treasure of a precious Mother.”

“Today we ought to look toward God and lift up our eyes to God and say, ‘Thank you for mothers. Thank you for the institution of motherhood. Thank you for mothers who take their roles seriously and do their job well! Halleluiah!’”

Bishop Blake Honors Mothers, Wives on Mother’s Day

“It’s a good day to thank God that He gave you a treasure that cannot be evaluated or assessed…That is the treasure of a precious Mother” – Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake

Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake found inspiration in a mother’s love for his Mother’s Day sermon titled, “A Woman, A Wife, A Mother.” He honored First Lady Mae L. Blake’s elegance and wisdom as a wife and mother, and shared some of her many contributions to the life of the church. An author, former principal and teacher at the West Angeles Christian Academy, “Lady Mae,” as she’s affectionately called, also designed the interiors of the West Angeles Cathedral and the North Campus multi-purpose building.

Bishop Blake also recognized every mother’s ability to do the extraordinary.

“Did you all see that mother in Baltimore (who pulled her son out of a riotous crowd and publicly disciplined him)? Thank you for every time you went upside our heads!” Bishop said. “If gangs are ever going to be extinct, it’s going to be because mothers put their foot down, and do like that lady did…She would not let him go, and I believe he’s a different young man now than the young man he was a few days before.”

Bishop continued by addressing all mothers and wives everywhere.

“Let me apologize to every mother who knows you have not been treated right. Let me apologize to every wife who was left behind…I know it’s been rough; I know it’s been tough, but let me inform you that there’s a God in Heaven, and you would not have made it this far without the Love of God.

“We love you, and we appreciate every diaper you changed, every bottle of milk you warmed…for every school visit you made…Come on, praise God for mothers!”

Below are some of our favorite quotes from Sunday’s sermon:

“The word of God tells us that the last item on God’s agenda of creation was woman. God looked at Adam and then found that none of the things that already existed could provide Adam with the…added aspects of existence that he needed.”

“Woman was made out of man, so that man would esteem her and seek her welfare as he esteemed himself.”

“If he abased her and disrespected her, then he abased and disrespected himself. If he abused her, then he abused himself.”

“We’re supposed to be transformers – not conformers.”

“When folk stepped out – He stepped in.”

“You can’t go so far that the love of God cannot reach you.”

“No matter who you are, where you’ve come from, or where you’ve been, God loves you. Look over at your neighbor and say, “God loves you!”
