Located in the heart of Los Angeles, West Angeles COGIC has a heart for civic responsibility, and we understand its necessity in addressing the development, the strength, and the well-being of our constituents. We rise to the call and duty of civic responsibility with a loving interest.
West Angeles’ goal is to establish and maintain a mutually beneficial relationship between our surrounding communities, the local businesses, and the government on a local, state and national level. Blake and our Community Relations Director, Elder Charles Blake II, we have ongoing programs which address and raise awareness in a number of areas, including:

The West Angeles Community Development Corporation was founded in early 1994 as an outreach program of West Angeles Church of God in Christ, then a 15,000-member congregation in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles. Dr. Lula Balton and Bishop Charles E. Blake, together with Trustees of West Angeles Church, founded the CDC to expand the compassionate outreach and neighborhood development ministries of the church in the face of mounting problems of poverty and injustice in the surrounding community.
Lack of jobs, business investment and affordable, decent housing, struggling schools, endemic homelessness, and gang activity were all signs that new, long-term improvements were needed. At the same time, new business and community-building activities had also begun and were growing. These signs were new life and hope on which to build.
In January 1994, the West Angeles CDC was incorporated as a nonprofit organization to bring together people and resources to help develop the community. The CDC leads initiatives in many areas of community development, services, and support, including:
The mission of the West Angeles Community Development Corporation is to increase social and economic justice, demonstrate compassion and alleviate poverty as tangible expressions of the Kingdom of God through the vehicle of community development.
Under the vision of our Pastor, Presiding Bishop Charles E. Blake, Sr., our donors save lives in Africa, build orphanages in Haiti, and change lives right here at home. We cherish our donors and the legacies they create.
Our donors are from all walks of life: from the humble single working parent to the most celebrated athlete. Each has carefully chosen to fund projects and causes that are near and dear to them as an investment not only in the future of their community, but also for establishing God’s Kingdom. Because of the generosity of donors like you, millions of dollars are flowing throughout our local community, and into communities worldwide.
Our new Mobile Cause platform allows our donors to choose an area of giving which is near and dear to your heart. Each month a statement is sent out to our donors showing when they gave and what an impact it has. Many donors become lay leaders in the foundation of the Kingdom by sharing their passion for legacy with other families and involving the next generation in philanthropy.

The West Angeles Education and Enrichment Ministry (EEM) provides various educational programs for our youth, adults, and surrounding communities. EEM empowers students by providing a raised standard of excellence and access to resources. These opportunities are equally spread throughout the entire congregation and their families.
Directed by Deacon John Wilson, the EEM Program is provided in accordance with the COGIC Urban Initiatives, and the directives of our Pastor and Presiding Bishop, Charles E. Blake, Sr.
Our ministry accomplishes our mission through after-school studies, SAT prep courses, college admission and financial aid information, youth development rites of passage programs, and summer enrichment programs.
West Angeles’ After-school Enrichment Program offers focused study in all levels of Math, Science, History, and English, for grades 6-12. We teach concepts in small groups with enhanced one-on-one help as needed.
Students today are exposed to algebra concepts and formulas much earlier. Unfortunately, a large portion of students is failing their math classes due to unpreparedness. Parents can bridge the gap in learning by becoming involved with their children in our math, science, and history enrichment classes.
Limited Enrollment! To enroll your child in our program, please download the registration package below and bring it to our office between the hours of 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday.
Also, if you are interested in a high-quality and affordable one-on-one tutor in all levels of math from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, please call our Program’s Math Contractor, Cherylnn Pope, CYP Tutorial Services, at 323/733-8300.
EEM offers a low-cost SAT Prep Course as part of the Princeton Review TM / West Angeles Church enrichment partnership. This prep course includes the course material, over 20 classroom hours, and two practice tests (evaluated by Princeton Review, America’s #1 Test Prep Provider). For many students, this course will raise SAT scores significantly, making all the difference in college admissions.

The West Angeles College Readiness Program prepares parents and students for the college admissions process. In our weekend sessions, families get a chance to sit and speak with college admissions counselors. Information the counselors provide for students and their families include:
Meeting application deadlines, writing essays, and visiting campuses can make the admissions process overwhelming, but the path to your child’s success doesn’t have to be. Choosing the right school is crucial to your child’s success. The family should be prepared for all the changes that come with this transition – both financially and academically.
Do you have a plan for your child after high school? The West Angeles College Readiness Program helps you to be prepared. CLICK HERE for more information.
Our scholarship program, the West Angeles Sponsorship Fund Organization (WASFO), enables the congregation and the community to provide financial support to our West Angeles scholars as they make their way through college.
Each year, West Angeles has an annual sponsorship fund drive in which the congregation is asked to participate, but giving is welcome any time of the year!

WANT MORE COLLEGE PREP INFO? Read great tips on financial aid, college prep, education enrichment and more, by our Education & Enrichment Director, Deacon John Wilson, below:
Dear Beloved,
God blessed us as a people with infinitely greater opportunities than any other black people on the face of the earth. But we are blessed to reach out to those of us who are less fortunate, and to lift them and help them. None of us can remain satisfied in a community which is blessed and prosperous until we reach out and bless everyone in that community.
I pray that, in this season, every one of us stands upon our watch, and goes to God and pray:
“God, I just don’t want to stand by; I want to make a positive impact on earth. Please make me a positive influence on life on earth; make me a positive influence on my children, on my family, on my community. God, please show me what you would have me to do. Please show me the direction you want me to go.”
As Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ, I’ve asked every one of our 12,000 churches across the globe to incorporate into their operations five areas of emphasis. We call this the Church of God In Christ Urban Initiatives.
The five areas are:
1. Education – Education and work skills are key to family stability and community growth. This includes mentoring, tutoring, and Christian education.
2. Economic Development – A church can offer services such as job training, employment counseling and assistance, and entrepreneurship programs.
3. Crime Prevention – Develop alternative programs to proactively keep young people out of a life of crime, and to create collaborative relationships with law enforcement.
4. Family – Create programs to strengthen the family, with a special emphasis on the role of fathers.
5. Financial Literacy – Include programs for both young people and adults which highlight the importance of saving, owning real estate, and wealth-building.
Some of the best and brightest leaders in our denomination have been assigned to spearhead the success of these programs across the nation. If every church has these five initiatives at work, there will be 60,000 programs in inner city America impacting our nation, impacting our cities, and impacting our communities across our nation. West Angeles Church of God In Christ has all five of these areas well covered, and we must expand even more.
We need your gifts, your skills, and your involvement, and we look forward to working with you. You, too, are Blessed to be a Blessing.

Water baptism is a joyous occasion which is central to our rich Christian traditions. The immersion into the waters symbolizes Jesus’ death; the emergence symbolizes His resurrection and a new life in Christ.
Water baptism by immersion is an outward expression of an internal testimony; an indication of personal faith in action and a time of spiritual cleansing.
West Angeles Baptisms for Children
At West Angeles COGIC, we believe that every born-again believer in Jesus Christ should be water baptized. For children, it is our belief and practice to baptize them when they can best understand the ordinance of, and the reason for, baptism (infants up to three years of age are dedicated unto the Lord; please click here for Baby Dedications).
For children ages 4-10 years of age, we recommend that they be interviewed by our Children’s Ministry Director. The Children’s Ministry will advise the church when a child is ready for baptism. To contact this ministry, you may call 323-733-8300 extension 2624.
ADULT & YOUTH BAPTISM GUIDELINES
Baptisms for youth and adults are performed monthly on the 2nd and 4th Sunday nights (excluding special holidays) at the North Campus Sanctuary during our 7:00 p.m. worship service. Baptism candidates are asked to report to the back area of the Sanctuary at 6:00 p.m. Late arrivals will be rescheduled.
